Hearing Health

FAQs

You may be surprised but you don’t need to clean your ears every day. In fact, cleaning your ears too frequently can be damaging. Your ears are naturally self-cleaning. You should never use an ear swab to remove earwax as they can push wax further into the ear canal and can even harm the delicate parts of your inner ear. If your ears are bothering you, visit us for an ear exam.

If you experience a ringing in your ears, even if sporadic, you have tinnitus. Tinnitus is when you can hear a ringing, buzzing, humming, or whistling sound in your ears when your environment is often quiet. Signs that tinnitus is going away include: your tinnitus is less frequent, it seems less perceivable, you’re less bothered by it, or you are able to sleep or relax without it interfering.

Hearing loss is considered a disability if the person scores 60 percent or less on a word recognition test. This would be considered a moderate hearing loss. Hearing loss can affect your communication skills, relationships, and work performance. It’s important to manage hearing loss with hearing aids and to be vocal about any kind of support you need, both at home and in the work place.

Allergies can cause tinnitus and other ear problems. Allergies can make your ears itch, fill with fluid, and ache. Sometimes if your allergies are severe, you can experience temporary hearing loss and tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the perception of hearing a noise in your ears or head when no external noise is present. If you ever hear a buzzing, humming, ringing, whooshing, or whistling sound in your ears, then you most likely have tinnitus. Does everyone have tinnitus? Yes, to some extent most people will experience tinnitus at some point in there life.

Hyperacusis is a disorder in loudness perception. Patients who have hyperacusis may appear overly sensitive to a range of sounds, finding many noises unbearable and painfully loud. At our hearing clinic, we can assess your hearing and help you create a management plan.
