How

Hearing Works

How we hear involves a complex system leading from the inner workings of the ear to the brain.

  1. Sound is fist transmitted through the air as sound waves. The sound waves are collected by the outer ear and sent down the ear canal to the eardrum.

  2. The sound waves cause the eardrum to vibrate, causing the tiny bones in the middle ear to move.

  3. The motion of these tiny bones causes fluid in the inner ear (cochlea) to move.

  4. The movement of this fluid in the inner ear causes the hair cells in the cochlea to bend and change into electrical impulses.

  5. These electrical impulses are transmitted to the hearing nerve and sent to the brain where they are interpreted into sound.
Hearing and

Brain Health

Your hearing plays a much larger role in your overall health than you may realize. Hearing is an integral part of a healthy and active brain. In fact, we don’t hear with our ears, we “hear” when sound waves travel through our ear up to the auditory cortex of the brain. When you can’t hear well due to hearing loss, your brain won’t receive the proper stimulation it needs to be active and healthy. Over time, this can lead to social isolation, depression, fatigue, and cognitive decline.

To keep your brain active and healthy it’s important to manage the signs of hearing loss right away. If you suspect you have a hearing impairment, it’s important to schedule a hearing check. We can evaluate your hearing and go over treatment options, including hearing aids. Hearing aids will provide your brain with the sounds it has been missing, so you can hear better and feel confident joining the conversation again.
